for the new secretary of state. with u.n. ambassador susan rice still considered president obama's first choice, mccain's new assignment could result in an intense showdown. that is an understatement. >> his new favorite role is taking on susan rice, and i think -- >> that's all he has been doing is taking on susan rice. >> he is on to this one. it's going to be a great test for the president. it's clear the president wants to nominate her. it's clear he has not made that decision final. if he does, there's going to be a heck of a fight. it's going to put republicans in a box. they're going to have to make some decisions. at least lindsey graham and john mccain seem to be of one mind on this. >> going back to john mccain, though, this is a case of senatorial stalking. he was -- he had to give up the chairmanship of the armed services committee. he was term limited out in terms of the republican roles, so he went looking for another place where he could kind of do the same thing. >> he has found a corner of his own, but i think what is ironic here, mark, is that the republicans have ralli

character. i saw his criticism of susan rice. i had some criticism myself. he was asking questions that needed to be asked, as we get answers, that will solve those problems. >> let me ask you one other thing when it comes to the mode of investigation that our government is now employing. i said it off the top of this introduction to you, that the fbi has now taken to facebook and twitter. look, you can say what you want about that being an investigative technique but facebook and twitter were widely credited for the arab spring uprisings all across the arab world so you can't make light that that is a pretty powerful tool. it may just sound we're kind of at wit's end. i'm not going to suggest you can give me information that's classified, but do you have a good sense at least that they're getting momentum with the tools they can use, that they're making headway in their investigation in libya? >> well, i understand from senator kerry we are going to have a report on the accountability review board before the end of this year. that's the next three weeks. they must be making some p

the senate foreign relations committee next year which could put him in a spot to grill susan rice if obama chooses her as his next secretary of state. as we've seen since the benghazi attack, mccain is one of rice's harshest critics. the two met late last month along with other senators to discuss rice's television appearances during the aftermath of those september 11th attacks in libya. rice hoped to put mccain's fears at ease but he came out of the meetings saying he only had more questions than when he went in. mccain spokesman says he will seek a spot on the international affairs panel which oversees the state department. republicans have said they would rather see john kerry as circumstance -- secretary of state over susan rice. hillary clinton is still polling very well after her stint with the state department and democrats are practically begging to see her in 2016. according to the latest abc news, "washington post" poll, 57% of people say they would support her run. although abc is reporting today she said she'l

the attack with susan rice and her comments. i want to get it back to the president and the secretary of state and they bear responsibility for what happened on 9/11. jon: well, secretary clinton has already said that the buck stops with her as far as diplomatic security. eric nordstrom, who was in charge of security on the ground, has already testified before congress saying that he had asked for more security and it was rejected at the state department headquarters. is that secretary clinton's responsibility? >> well it seems that the president should have known about the level of recruitment going on for al qaeda-linked terrorists right in that area. it was a hotbed. it was really a center of recruiting right there in eastern libya. so i want to know why the president continued to speak of having al qaeda on the run when in fact that is not the case at all. we saw them getting stronger, more forceful and the story that he was telling the american people i think now is going to come out was a story to deceive the american people but certainly to mislead them. jon: you started off th
